Akaki Aladashvili, the First Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues, said on Thursday that Georgia remained optimistic about its relations with the European Union and continued to fulfill its commitments.
In an interview with Imedi TV, Aladashvili noted that Georgia continues to implement its obligations, including those undertaken under the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA).
He emphasized that the future trajectory of cooperation would depend on whether relations were based on equality and the fundamental principles on which the European Union was founded.
“If there is a fair approach based on equality, and if the idea around which the European Union was created - peace, equality and political pluralism - is upheld, then, of course, we will also see positive trends in our relations with them”, Aladashvili said.
He added that finding common ground would become more difficult if, in his view, the EU continued what he described as a “feudal” or “vassal” approach toward Georgia.
“If they continue with the kind of attitude we are seeing today - a feudal, vassal-like approach, where we are expected to stand on one leg and carry out their demands, such as joining the war, repealing the law against LGBT propaganda, withdrawing the Transparency Law, imposing sanctions on Russia and undermining our own economy - then it will be difficult to find common ground in this dialogue”, Aladashvili concluded.
