Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, said on Thursday that the European Parliament’s debate on Georgia was a poorly executed political show aimed solely at creating political noise, shaping public sentiment and damaging the reputation of the Georgian government.
In his remarks, Makhashvili stressed that the resolutions adopted by the European Parliament have no legal force.
“Society once again heard the same messages and the same extreme political bias. It was a poorly executed political show whose sole purpose was to create political noise, generate certain sentiments and damage the reputation of the Georgian government. Institutionally and legally, these resolutions have no legal force whatsoever”, he noted.
“For them, Mikheil Saakashvili was one of those who carried out the tasks assigned to him. Whatever they ordered, he did. Naturally, they are trying to save their own agent and remove him from the jurisdiction of Georgian justice”, Makhashvili concluded.
The debate on Georgia was held in a virtually empty European Parliament chamber. Several MEPs once again called for the release of Mikheil Saakashvili and opposition activists, while sanctions against Georgian authorities were also among the demands.
