Akaki Aladashvili, the First Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues, on Wednesday said that every established state acts primarily in accordance with its own interests, arguing that historical and contemporary political decisions should be assessed through that lens.
Commenting on Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s recent remarks, Aladashvili cited King Erekle II’s decision to sign the Treaty of Georgievsk as an example of a move made in Georgia’s national interest.
“Every established state first and foremost cares for and acts based on its own interests. This is exactly what we saw when Erekle II took that step [the Treaty of Georgievsk], and it was motivated solely by Georgia’s interests”, the official said.
The lawmaker contrasted the historical agreement with the actions of former President Mikheil Saakashvili during the 2008 war with Russia.
“An absolutely opposite example was the step taken by Saakashvili when the war began in 2008. He took that step based on the interests of another state rather than Georgia’s own interests”, Aladashvili stated.
