Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday accused the Biden US administration of applying unfair political pressure on Georgia despite referring to the country as a strategic partner.
Speaking at a briefing held at the Government Administration, Kobakhidze said the former US administration often acted “extremely harshly” toward Georgia and used various mechanisms of political pressure against the country.
According to the Prime Minister, this approach was particularly evident on issues related to Georgia’s sovereignty, legislation, transparency, and public values.
Kobakhidze argued that understanding historical realities requires examining how states interact with Georgia even when they describe themselves as the country’s friends or strategic partners.
“The United States is a clear example of this”, he said. “The previous US administration often acted completely unfairly and extremely harshly toward a country it referred to as a strategic partner, using various mechanisms of political pressure against Georgia”.
The Prime Minister stated that when the Georgian government sought to defend its positions on certain issues and make independent decisions, it was met with different forms of political and diplomatic pressure.
Kobakhidze made the remarks while discussing broader historical and political issues, emphasising what he described as the importance of safeguarding Georgia’s sovereignty and independent decision-making
