Kakha Kaladze, Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said on Friday that it was “incomprehensible” that some opposition forces had identified August 7 as the date marking the start of the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
Speaking to journalists, Kaladze said that archival materials clearly indicate the date of the war’s outbreak.
“This is incomprehensible. Let’s look at when the commemoration of the war took place and review the archival materials, where it is very clear that it was August 8. Perhaps we should ask the [United] National Movement why they changed the date. No one can rewrite history - we all know everything very well”, Kaladze said.
“I ask you to review specific archival video materials, where there are facts and evidence regarding all of this. There is also a resolution that they signed”, he added.
Kaladze further claimed that, as a result of the actions of the United National Movement-led government, responsibility for the outbreak of the war was placed on the Georgian state and army.
“I emphasize once again that these were treacherous actions against the Georgian state, and there must be an appropriate response to all of this.
The outbreak of the war was blamed on the Georgian state and the army, and this is clearly stated. When you sign such documents, it is unacceptable”, he said.
“Generally, everything related to the 2008 war is the result of the treacherous policy pursued by the government at the time. Of course, all the actions of the bloody regime were driven from outside. Unfortunately, sabotage and hostile activities against the country continue to this day. We must all work together to preserve peace and ensure the country’s economic development”, Kaladze concluded.
