Nino Tsilosani, the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday welcomed the Republic of Nauru’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with the self-proclaimed Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, calling it a significant milestone for the country’s foreign policy.
In her interview with Imedi TV, Tsilosani emphasised that reducing the number of countries that previously recognised the entities contributes directly to the restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity.
“This is another additional step taken toward the restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity. When the number of countries that recognise the ‘independence’ of our country’s occupied territories and open diplomatic relations with them decreases, of course this is an additional step toward the restoration of our territorial integrity”, she said.
The Vice Speaker also noted that identical steps were taken by other nations years ago and stressed that the government continues to work actively to ensure Georgia’s territorial integrity is fully recognised in accordance with international standards.
“It is also very important that not only Nauru, which has now cancelled diplomatic relations with the occupied regions, but that identical steps were taken by two countries several years ago during the time of our government. We are actively working so that Georgia’s territorial integrity is recognised and acknowledged in accordance with all international standards, which will bring us even closer to the process of restoring our territorial integrity”, Tsilosani concluded.
