Nino Tsilosani, the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday criticised Germany’s proposal to abandon unanimity in EU decision-making, arguing it would undermine the sovereignty of smaller member states.
“We have faced this very problem of double standards for years, and it now appears that the EU bureaucracy has long been determined to create a two-tier union, where one group of states has the right to make decisions, while the other must trample on its own sovereignty and simply accept those decisions”, she said.
“If this is a union in which countries are required to give up their sovereignty, then there can be no talk of any European standards”, Tsilosani added.
During a keynote speech in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for the EU’s unanimity principle to be scrapped. Instead, a “qualified majority” should be enough, he said at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation on Wednesday.
