Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Tuesday accused opposition groups of directly undermining the state by seeking to obstruct the Georgian Government’s efforts to reset relations with the United States, the European Union, and Germany.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Makhashvili noted that the process of resetting relations was not guaranteed due to strong opposition both inside and outside the country.
“This is direct sabotage against the state, as these political groups are trying to harm Georgia’s interests. They are fiercely fighting to prevent any positive dynamic from emerging in these relations. They are fiercely fighting to ensure that there are no meetings, no conversations, and no dialogue”, Makhashvili said.
He accused the opposition of fighting to prevent meetings, dialogue, and positive dynamics, while attempting to belittle and discredit ongoing progress.
“On the contrary, they are doing their utmost to obstruct this process. They are trying to belittle and discredit it, as if nothing had happened. However, society can clearly see that a great deal is happening, that these relations are gradually progressing, and that we have achieved a great deal despite the opposition from these political groups”, he noted.
The official stressed that instead of supporting the government and the country during difficult geopolitical times, these groups were doing everything possible to damage the process.
“These people should not be surprised when sabotage cases are opened against them and when we call them political radicals. Instead of standing by the government and standing by the country so that we can calmly and peacefully navigate these geopolitical upheavals, they are doing their utmost to damage this process”, Makhashvili continued.
“We are seeing this with regard to the United States, the European Union, and Germany. However, the state is doing everything possible to ensure that we navigate this process calmly and peacefully, while protecting Georgia’s national interests”, he concluded.
