Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Tuesday said that if Germany or other countries show genuine willingness to reset relations and move them in a positive direction, Georgia would always play a constructive role in the process.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Makhashvili explained that many EU member states had held an incorrect understanding of Georgia, and that this approach has now failed.
“The understanding of Georgia held by many EU member states was incorrect. This approach has failed. It is a fact that there is a willingness to reconsider this position. It is also a fact that Georgia’s attitude in this regard has not changed; on the contrary, we value our relations with our partners, and Georgia was not the initiator of the deterioration in these relations”, Makhashvili said.
The official affirmed that Georgia was ready to restore ties on the basis of common interests and mutual respect, provided there was genuine interest from the other side.
“If there is interest and we see a genuine willingness on the part of Germany or other countries to reset these relations and take them in a positive direction, we will always play a constructive role in this process. We are ready to restore these relations on the basis of common interests and mutual respect”, he concluded.
