Irakli Cheishvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, said on Friday that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is now publicly expressing what the Georgian government has maintained for years - that violence against police officers is unacceptable.
Commenting on the ministerial meeting in Washington on the resurgence of political terrorism, which Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili attended at the invitation of Secretary Rubio, Cheishvili highlighted the alignment between American and Georgian positions on this issue.
“Today US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is talking about what our government has been saying for years: that violence against police officers is unacceptable, and that police officers must not be burned alive with Molotov cocktails”, he said.
The MP noted that the meeting, attended by representatives of approximately 60 countries, provided an important international platform to openly address political terrorism as a serious global challenge.
“Approximately 60 countries were represented at the ministerial meeting held in Washington. The Georgian authorities believe it is important for the international community to openly address political terrorism as a problem and a challenge. The ruling team says Georgia is a good example of how foreign funding was used to encourage political violence in the country”, Cheishvili concluded.
