Georgia’s ruling party is set to file a new lawsuit with the Constitutional Court on Monday, seeking to ban former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia’s party in addition to several opposition groups already named in an earlier appeal.
The governing Georgian Dream party said it would ask the court to prohibit the activities of the United National Movement, Coalition for Change, Lelo, Federalists and Gakharia’s party.
Representatives of the ruling team argued that political groups engaged in efforts to fuel destabilisation in the country should not have a place in Georgia’s political landscape.
Under Georgian legislation, the Constitutional Court has up to nine months from the date a lawsuit is accepted for consideration to issue a ruling on the case.
