Georgian law enforcement officers on Tuesday arrested an individual wanted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on charges related to supporting the activities of terrorist organizations.
The man was wanted on charges of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, as well as providing and attempting to provide such support.
Officers from the Wanted Persons Division of the Central Criminal Police Department’s Main Division for Combating Organized Crime arrested the individual at Tbilisi International Airport after he arrived in Georgia from abroad.
According to US law enforcement agencies, the suspect established a group in the United States to support a foreign terrorist organization and created a financial support network for this purpose, which he personally led.
The group’s leader and members provided material, logistical, and financial support to terrorist organizations in Syria, including the Islamic State.
The detained individual also encouraged various people to travel to Syria to fight and offered assistance in doing so.
Extradition proceedings against the detainee are currently underway in accordance with Georgian law.
The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs has successfully cooperated with US law enforcement agencies for many years in combating various forms of crime.
