Georgia’s State Security Service on Wednesday reported that its Anti-Corruption Agency has arrested two individuals, a Georgian and a Nigerian citizen, on charges related to the fraudulent acquisition of money through a scheme carried out by a group acting in prior agreement.
The Security Service noted that the arrests were made based on a court warrant following investigative and operational measures.
The investigation found that a Nigerian citizen residing in Georgia and a coach of LLC Football Club Gardabani signed a fictitious employment contract with another Nigerian citizen at the football club. The arrangement was intended to assist the individual in obtaining a temporary residence permit in Georgia.
In exchange for facilitating the process, the suspects allegedly received USD 3,000 from the Nigerian citizen, investigators said.
The case remains under investigation. If convicted, the suspects could face up to seven years in prison.
