European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand said on Monday that the European Union was closely monitoring the legal action concerning the banning of major political parties.
Wigand made the remarks ahead of the Constitutional Court’s October 21 hearing on a lawsuit seeking to ban five opposition parties.
In his remarks, Wigand noted that the proceedings raised concerns regarding the potential instrumentalisation of the justice system.
“This process involving legislative amendments and the potential banning of opposition parties, taken together with previous statements raises concerns about the possible instrumentalisation of the justice system and poses a threat to fundamental freedoms, democratic pluralism, and fair political competition. The European Union is following this situation closely and will continue to monitor it”, Wigand said.
