German Member of the European Parliament Irmhild Boßdorf said on Friday that the European Parliament was once again attempting to intimidate Georgia.
Boßdorf said her party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), did not support accusations against the ruling Georgian Dream party over alleged attempts to ban political parties.
She also referred to the campaign against the AfD in Germany, arguing that similar developments were taking place elsewhere in Europe.
“The European Parliament is once again attempting to intimidate Georgia. We do not subscribe to the accusations against Georgian Dream alleging that it is trying to ban political parties. We see similar things happening in Europe as well”, Boßdorf said.
“The possibility of banning the German party AfD is also being actively discussed by various political parties. Just like Georgian Dream, the AfD is currently the strongest political force according to polls conducted in Germany”, she added.
Boßdorf argued that there was no need for the European Parliament to adopt a resolution targeting the Georgian Dream.
“We need a relationship with Georgia. The European Union always tries to pursue its own political course and advance its agenda, rather than engaging in dialogue with the people who actually live in that country”, she concluded.
