Georgia’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday summoned Seyed Ali Moujani, Iran’s Ambassador to Georgia, over statements he posted on social media.
Moujani recently published a Facebook post featuring an image of Queen Ketevan projected onto the facade of the Iranian Embassy in Tbilisi.
In the post, he said the image symbolised historical memory surrounding “numerous conflicting accounts” and announced that he would soon share the findings of his preliminary research on Queen Ketevan, along with historical documents and sources preserved in Iran and Georgia.
He stressed that the research reflected his personal views as a historian and did not represent an official position.
Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandre Khvtisiashvili told the Ambassador that the statements he had shared on social media exceeded the scope of diplomatic activities.
According to Khvtisiashvili, such remarks negatively affect public sentiment. He expressed hope that the Iranian side would take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring and that it would not become necessary for Georgia to take further action.
Khvtisiashvili also told the Ambassador that diplomats accredited to Georgia should carry out their duties within the framework of their diplomatic mandate and competence, observe established norms of diplomatic relations, and refrain from interpreting the history and domestic affairs of the host country.
