Georgia has joined more than 50 United Nations member states in calling on Russia to agree to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine.
The joint statement, supported by Georgia, all European Union member states, as well as Australia, Canada, Honduras, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Panama and South Korea, condemns Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and reaffirms support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
The statement was released by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day.
“This senseless war and the immense human suffering it has caused can end immediately”, Rasmussen said.
“We strongly urge Russia to respond to calls for a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire and to resume negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. We reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders”, he continued.
He added that the signatory countries would continue their steadfast support for Ukraine.
“On this special day, Ukraine’s Independence Day, we will continue to stand firmly with Ukraine. In accordance with the UN Charter, there is no alternative to a just and lasting peace”, Rasmussen said.
