Georgian Parliament Vice Speaker Giorgi Kakhiani on Thursday welcomed Nauru’s decision to revoke its recognition of the Russian occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), calling it “very positive news” and a major achievement of Georgia's non-recognition policy.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Kakhiani said the decision reflected the effectiveness of Georgia's foreign policy and the consistent implementation of its non-recognition strategy.
“Our society received very positive news yesterday, and all of this is the result of the non-recognition policy. One of the key priorities of our foreign policy is precisely the policy of non-recognition”, Kakhiani said.
He added that the move represented “a major victory” for both Georgia's foreign policy and the support of its international partners.
Kakhiani also pointed to the growing international backing for Georgia's annual United Nations resolution on internally displaced persons and refugees from the occupied territories as further evidence of the policy's success.
“The effectiveness of our efforts is also demonstrated by the fact that every year the UN resolution on refugees and internally displaced persons from the occupied territories receives broader support. This, too, is linked to the non-recognition policy. All of this points to the consistent and effective implementation of Georgia's foreign policy”, he said.
Nauru has officially withdrawn its recognition of Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali as independent states, with the formal decision on the cancellation of diplomatic relations dated July 21.
