Davit Matikashvili, the Chair of the Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said the process of transforming the European Union into a “Soviet Union” had accelerated, commenting on Germany's proposal to abolish the consensus-based decision-making system within the bloc.
In his remarks, Matikashvili argued that abandoning unanimous decision-making would move the European Union closer to the governance model of the former Soviet Union.
“If the will of every member state is no longer taken into account, the very principle on which the European Union was founded, then it is moving very close to the system of governance that existed in the Soviet Union”, Matikashvili said.
According to Euronews, speaking at a policy address hosted by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the European Union should abolish the principle of unanimity, arguing that qualified majority voting should be sufficient for adopting key decisions.
